You don't need more leads. You need better ones.
To attract better leads in 2026, you need to be in the right place when the right people are making up their minds. And that place has moved.
Buyers now do most of their research on their own. According to HubSpot, 75% of B2B buyers prefer to research on their own before they speak to a salesperson. They ask AI tools. They read what other business owners say online. They compare you before you even know they exist.
By the time they get in touch, they've already shortlisted. The question is whether you made the list.
Here are five ways to get on it.
1. Be the answer when buyers ask AI
I bought a curved monitor recently. All the searching was done for me.
I asked Google's AI. It recommended a few models, built a table comparing them against what I needed, and I made my decision. I only visited one website, right at the end, to check the reviews of the one I'd already picked.
Every business that wasn't in that answer never had a chance.
Your buyers do the same thing. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google's AI who to hire, and the AI hands them a short list. If you're on it, you're in the running. If you're not, your competitor is.
Getting into those answers is called AI SEO. You might also see it called AEO (answer engine optimisation) or GEO (generative engine optimisation). Same idea: making sure AI tools can find, understand, and trust your business enough to recommend it.
Why it attracts better leads: people who find you through an AI recommendation arrive pre-sold. The AI has already compared you and put you forward.
A commercial furniture supplier in Australia and New Zealand we work with went from 6 enquiries a year from AI tools to 50, over 12 months.

2. Show up where people are already talking about the problem
Reddit is the modern water cooler.
People used to ask a family member or a colleague for a recommendation. Now they ask a crowd of people who've been there. "Has anyone used an agency that actually delivered?" "Is Google Ads still worth it?" "How do you keep up with leads?"
Those conversations are full of business owners actively looking for answers. And Reddit isn't just for students and gamers. HubSpot found that 38% of business decision makers on Reddit aren't on LinkedIn.
Reddit Ads let you appear in and around those conversations. You can reach people based on the communities they're part of and the topics they're discussing, while they're thinking about the problem you solve. Not while they're watching viral cooking videos.
Why it attracts better leads: you reach people at the moment they're trying to fix something, not when they're scrolling to kill time.
The catch: Reddit users can smell a sales pitch from a mile away. Ads that work there are honest, useful, and give something before they ask for anything. The audience in Australia and New Zealand is also smaller than on Google or Meta, so it works best as a focused test alongside your other channels, not a replacement for them.
3. Get into the conversation with ChatGPT Ads
This one is brand new.
In 2026, OpenAI started showing ads inside ChatGPT, including in Australia and New Zealand. They appear for people on the free and lower-cost plans, they're clearly labelled, and they're matched to what the person is asking about.
Think about what that means. Someone asks ChatGPT, "What should I look for in a commercial cleaner for a 40-person office?" Your ad can sit right there, in the middle of their decision.
AI SEO earns you a place in AI answers over time. ChatGPT Ads buy you a place now. The two work best together.
Why it attracts better leads: you reach people mid-decision, inside the tool they're using to make it.
It's early days. Costs, results, and best practice are still being worked out, and nobody has years of data yet. That's also the opportunity: early advertisers get in before their competitors crowd the space.
4. Make every click count
"We got 170 clicks and not one lead."
We hear some version of that all the time. The usual reaction is to blame the ads, or spend more. But most of the time, the ads aren't the problem.
The page people land on is.
More traffic doesn't fix a page that doesn't convert. It just makes the problem more expensive. Google Ads still work well in 2026, but only when the page behind the ad gives people a clear reason to get in touch: what you do, who it's for, why you, and what to do next.
Why it attracts better leads: a strong page and offer put off the wrong people and convince the right ones. Your cost per lead drops, and your lead quality rises.

5. Catch the people who aren't ready yet
Most people who visit your website aren't ready to buy today. They're researching. Comparing. Waiting for the right moment.
If your only option is "Contact us", those people leave and you never hear from them again. And the leads that do come in? Without a system to follow up, they go quiet. One business owner put it perfectly: "How do you keep up with leads?"
The fix is to give people something genuinely useful in exchange for their email, then stay in touch until they're ready. A guide, a video, a short quiz that tells them something about their business. Then follow-up that builds trust over weeks, not days.
Why it attracts better leads: by the time those people book a call, they already know you, trust you, and understand how you work. They're warmer, and easier to say yes to.

Which one should you start with?
Not all of them. Not at once.
Every business has one weak spot costing it more than the rest. For some, it's not being found. For others, it's a website that doesn't convert, or leads that go cold because nobody follows up. Fix that first, and everything else you spend works harder.
We think of it as three engines: Attract, Nurture, and Convert. Together they make up your Customer Generation Machine. The trick is knowing which one is holding you back.
That's what our free Customer Generation X-Ray is for. We look at what you have, what you don't have, and what's holding you back from the leads and sales you need.
We work with service businesses across New Zealand and Australia.
